DEPARTMENT OF PAEDIATRIC SURGERY                CALICUT MEDICAL COLLEGE 

 

HISTORY

          The Paediatric Surgery unit was started in Calicut medical College in November 1966 when Dr. George Thaliath FRCS Assistant Professor of Paediatric Surgery was transferred from Trivandrum Medical College to Calicut.

Dr. George Thaliath started the Paediatric Surgery unit in Ward IV in the Beach hospital. He started special clinics for treating children with burns and also started neonatal surgery. A brilliant surgeon, an eminent teacher and above all a noble and upright individual, his career was cut short by myocardial infarction. Due to ill health, he moved back to Trivandrum in 1970 and passed away in 1976.

Then the unit was successively manned by Dr. K.P.Rajagopal, Dr. Sankarankutty Warrier, Dr. S.M.Pillai all Assistant Professors in General Surgery.

On January 1st 1973 Dr. Karthikeya Varma was transferred to Calicut and assumed Charge as the head of the unit. A second unit was created when Dr. T.P.Joseph joined in 1978. In 1980 MCh training in Paediatric Surgery was started in Calicut Medical College. A third unit started functioning in 1984 with Dr. Gopalakrishnan Achari, as Associate Professor in Charge. 

·        1974 – November 14 department was shifted from Beach hospital to   new      premises in IMCH Calicut.

·        1976 – Department was made independent from General Surgery.

·        1982 – First batch of MCh students passed out

·        1989 – department recognized for research by Calicut University with
  Dr. K.K.Varma as guide.

·        1990 – A separate OT complex was completed for Paediatric Surgery

·        1991- IAPS annual conference and silver jubilee of department was organized

·        1994 – A seminar room was added to the department

·        1994 – Dr. K.K. Varma designated as Professor Emeritus
